THE FOOTBALL COMPETITION FINALS

"Great deeds from great teams under trying circumstances," is, in the essence, the opinion of the large crowd of spectators who witnessed the semi-final match between The Narandera Imperials and Coolamon. It was one of two matches of the S.W.D.F. Association competition since 1914, when the association went into recess owing to the war.
It was also the first occasion that the Coolamon team has played its way into the "big four" and followers of the game were generally gratified to see the Coolamon boys make such a bold bid for a chance in the premiership final, as they did on Saturday. In the earlier days of the competition Coolamon found the opposition too strong, but this year the club organised on a sound basic, backed up by good sports of that prosperous little village. There are few, indeed, who would begrudge Coolamon better luck and success next season, when we hope to see the competition commenced earlier and all seven teams battling for supremacy.
The other semifinal match was played at Matong between Marrar and Ganmain, and was a very keenly contested, resulting in a win for the former team by 31 to 18. This match also attracted a big crowd of people, and aroused considerable interest among follows of the king of winter sports.
The special train chartered by the Association from Marrar to Matong carried about 800 people; and the train engaged by the Narandera club, was largely patronised. The latter train was timed to leave Yanco at 1.30 pm, but it left 10 to 15 minutes earlier, and a number of Leeton people missed it. Semi Final - Saturday, Sepember 27, 1919 at Grong Grong
Narandera ....... 1.2 .. 1.3 .. 1.3 .. 3.4 (22)
Coolamon ........ 1.1 .. 1.1 .. 1.3 .. 2.5 (17)

Umpire: Mr. D. Harrod, of NSW League
Goals - Narandera: J Whitty, B Hawkshaw, T Moon
Coolamon: L Stainsby, Dawe
Match report: The match easily lends itself to description, especially up till three quarter intervals. A strong wind blew across the oval, and the play was practically confirmed to the eastern wing.  There have been better games to look at but it was strenuous to a degree, and throughout the play see-sawed. Had it been a calm afternoon it is safe to say that there would have been a first-class exhibition of Australian football. In the absence of Ted Roach, Jim Grimmond captained the Imperials, and Alonza Slade was in charge of Coolamon. Both teams were represented by their best available eighteen, and the game opened earnestly both sides putting all their strength, pace and force into play. In the first quarter Narandera scored eight points, as against seven by Coolamon.

The only point scored in the second quarter was credited to Narandera. The play was even in the third quarter, but Coolamon succeeded at getting two points which made the scores equal. The last quarter was a sensational term, and the play gripped and held the spectators in excitement and suspense. Soon after resuming Cosgrove got a single for Coolamon and this followed by a goal, kicked by Dawe, much to the delight of the green's supporters, some of whom were now inclined to consider their team was "home and dried." The play opened up and the ball travelled at a rare pace up and down the ground, until Clarkson secured and sent on to Ben Hawkshaw, who scored a neat goal, making the scores level. Coolamon rallied and "Poddy" Slade got a mark within easy range.

Being such a fine kick, for Slade has few equals in Riverina as a forward, it looked certain that he would score a goal, but the ball fell short and as Harry Hawkshaw marked it there was great joy among Narandera supporters.

Narandera managed to again force the ball back, and Tyson Moon, who, with L. Hagen, was playing with great dash sniped a goal which gave Narandera a five-point lead.  The play was fairly even for the next few minutes, and the timekeepers signalled the close of the game, sighs of relief were heaved and cheer upon cheer went up from anxious hearts and sore throats.   Source - Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser / Tue 30 Sep 1919.

Semi Final - Saturday, Sepember 27, 1919 at Matong
Marrar ......... 0.1 .. 2.3 .. 3.3 .. 4.7 (31)
Ganmain ...... 0.2 .. 1.4 .. 2.5 .. 2.7 (19)

Umpire: Mr. A. O. Fraser, of NSW League
Goals - Marrar: R Plummer, C Turner
Ganmain: T Bell
Match report: The above teams met at Matong, and whereas Marrar was fully represented Ganmain took the field without Owen Egan, F. Burns, B. Lenon, J. Dunham. and Aub Graham, all of whom made their presence felt when the maroons downed the hitherto invincible Narandera Imperials on the latter's ground. In addition to this, Marrar held the proud distinction of newer having their colors lowered on the Matong ground. All this considered, the maroons' supporters were not over sanguine of winning the day against such odds, but they were certain that Ganmain would keep their redoubtable opponents "on the move" the whole journey. This surmise proved correct, and the pace set from the start never slackened - considering the temperature it was wonderful how the boys stuck so heroically to the task. The play see-sawed for the greater part of the game, and it was only towards the end of the final term that Marrar appeared to gain the mastery. With the strong wind blowing across the ground, the greater part of the play was confined to the eastern wing. "Billy" Scott piloted Marrar, whilst "Wally" Lenon had charge of Ganmain. Final - Saturday, October 4, 1919 at Ganmain
Narandera ..... 0.1 .. 0.1 .. 0.2 .. 1.7 (13)
Marrar .......... 1.4 .. 2.6 .. 3.8 .. 5.8 (38)

Umpire: Mr. Murray, of NSW League
Goals - Narandera: W McClure
Marrar: Cupples 2, R Plummer 2, T Barnes
Match report: The final of the South Westen District Football competition was played on Saturday last, between Narandera and Marrar, on the Ganmain football oval. The weather was ideal and about 1500 persons witnessed the match. The Narandera team, after playing so well right through the competition, put up a very disappointing game, the players appeared to stand off the ball a good deal and never played anything like up to their usual standard; consequently Marrar led right through the match, finally winning by 38 points to 13. The referee was Mr. Jack Murray, of Sydney, who handled the game to the entire satisfaction of both teams. He kept the players strict to the rules and pleased the onlookers by calling out so everyone could hear his various decisions.

The match was rough and hard throughout. Jerry Myers played the best game for Narandera and even when the aeroplane advertising the Peace Bonds flew overhead, Jerry took advantage, while the rest of the players looked up, to gain a few yards for his team. "Kewpie" Turner and Jack Blair were among Marrar's best players.
Narandera, by leading in points at the close of the competition, were the minor premiers and therefore have the right to challenge Marrar. Source - Murrumbidgee Irrigator / Tues 7 Oct 1919.

NO GRAND FINAL MATCH UNTIL PROTEST HEARD

In connection with last Saturday's premiership match, the Narandera Imperial Football Club has lodged a protest against the Marrar team on the ground that it played W. McIntyre, who is alleged, was not registered with the Association, and also in regard to C. Turner, who it is alleged played two competitions, viz., the SWDFA and the Junee Rugby Competition, the rules provide that no player shall play with two associations; and in regards to J. Thompson who also played in Saturday's match, not being, it is alleged qualified to do so. A special meeting of delegates to consider this protest has been arranged for Monday (October 13) at the Royal Mail Hotel.

In the event of the above protest being dismissed, it will be necessary for Narandera and Marrar to meet at Marrar in the grand final match, the date of which will be decided upon at the delegates meeting. Source - Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser / Tue 10 Oct 1919.

PROTEST DISMISSED

A special meeting of the S.W.D. Football Association was held at the Royal Mail Hotel on Monday (October 13) for the purpose of considering the protest entered against the action of the Marrar Club in playing unregistered men in the final competition match against Narandera on Saturday, October 4. There was present W. Guest (president), V. Barnett and R. H. Potter (Narandera), Sutton and Yelland (Leeton), Miller and Kelly (Grong Grong), Jones and Gumbleton (Matong), M. J. Dillon and Griggs (Coolamon) and Rae and Frew (Marrar).  The president explained the object of the meeting and said that personally he was there to give all parties a fair deal. He trusted that the matter before the delegates would be fairy dealt with. If any delegate wished to place someone else in the chair he was prepared to retire.
A motive of confidence in the president was carried on the motion of Frew and Potter. The matter before the meeting was dealt with.
The Narandera delegates withdrew their protest against J. Thompson and Turner being played against Narandera, and relied on the protest against W. McIntyre, who was unregistered, being played against Narandera.
The Marrar delegates stated that they understood that McIntyre was registered with the Association, otherwise they would not have played him. Mr. Frew said he handed McIntyre's name to the secretary for registration, and the latter referred him to Mr. V. Barrett, the assistant secretary. Mr. Potter said the protest was bases on McIntyre not being registered.

The register was produced, but McIntyre name was not included therein.
Messrs. L. Henshaw (secretary) and Mr. Barnett denied that McIntyre's name had been handed to either of them.
After further discussion a ballot was taken, with the result that the protest was defeated, with the result that the protest was defeated by six votes to three. The president said he hoped the decision would be accepted in good spirit. A vote of thanks to the president brought the meeting to a close. Challenge Final - Saturday, November 8, 1919 at Marrar
Marrar .......... 1.3 .. 2.11 .. 3.14 .. 4.4 (38)
Narandera ... 0.1 .. 0.1 .. 0.2 .. 1.4 (10)

Umpire: Mr. D Harrod, of NSW League
Match report: Rumor had it that last Saturday's match was going to be somewhat rough, but such was not the case. The game was very fairly contested, and the duties of the central umpire were carried out in an efficient and impartial manner by Mr. D. Harrod, of Sydney. Despite the fact that the day was hot a large concourse of spectators was present from the surrounding districts and as far down as Leeton speculation was rife as to which would be the winning team, but Marrar seemed to have the most supporters.

Play commenced about 4.30 pm, with Marrar kicking up hill. "Billy" Scott skipped Marrar, and, with the exception of Pat Gaynor, who had to stand down through having a poisoned hand, took the field with his strong forces. "Ted" Roach had charge of Narandera, who lined up two men short. The game needs little description, as from the bounce of the ball Marrar assumed control and scored a goal straight off the reel. After this they never looked back, but their shooting for goal was at times erratic - due to a measure to a cross wind. The challengers put up their best stunt in the final term, but Marrar ran out easy winners. The winners are entitled to hold the handsome silver cup by Messrs. W Guest and J. Roach, and previously won by Narandera, till next season.

MARRAR - ONE MERITORIOUS SEASON

Last issue we stated that Marrar was sanguine of winning the football competition of the SWDFA in the challenge match, Narandera v. Marrar. Their sanguinity was realised, for they defeated Narandera by 28 points. We compliment Marrar on their win, and it is all the more meritorious because Marrar is only a small place, and their ranks to draw from as far as players are concerned are small. Hence, we say that it reflects credit on both the people of Marrar and the players themselves that they stuck together throughout the competitions. Their players, too, had some distance to travel, and it is no small expense in this respect. Originally it was intended to run a competition with Coolamon as head centre, and to embrace such teams as Marrar, Coolamon, Ganmain and Matong.
A meeting was called for this purpose, and it was decided to reform the Coolamon Association. However, with the cessation of hostilities abroad, and the return of several soldier footballers, the Narandera club got together and reformed the old S.W.D.F. Association, which had gone into recess on account of the war in 1914.

Matong threw in their lot with Narandera, and this, of course, left only three teams to complete the Coolamon Association.

The result was that Marrar, Coolamon and Ganmain had to join the S.W.D. Association if they wished to have any football.
Marrar were dubious about joining, as they were afraid, they could not get their players to travel to Leeton. However, with the patriotism characteristic of the town folk they subscribed sufficient money to pay the fares of the players and guarantee their quota of the train expenses. Right throughout the competition the games were keenly contested, and Marrar held their own in every respect. They are goof sports and had keen men at their head of affairs and as delegates on the Association board.
