STAR PLAYERS ABSENT FOR FIRST AUST. RULES MATCH - by Jack Luhrs
Griffith will face Whitton for their first South West League competition match on the Ex-Servicemen's Oval without many of their star players.
At least five and possibly six of last year's semi-finalist team will be missing from the Griffith side for this opening match of the season.
Players unavailable are Bob Spears who is coaching Yenda this year, Frank Conlan who is playing Rugby League with the Yenda Blue heelers, Kevin Rowston who fractured his ankle last Sunday, and Doug Koehler and Alan Smith who have not yet appeared at training.
One of the big shocks to Griffith is a possibility of brilliant Vic Hathaway being appointed to Berrigan as a paid player. Hathaway has been part and parcel of the Griffith team for the past nine seasons and his loss would be a tremendous one.
Berrigan have made an excellent assistant coach offer to Hathaway, and it is unlikely that the Griffith Club would refuse his clearance application. Hathaway's absence would leave a great weakness in Griffith's playing strength.
However, Griffith have made some gains to compensate, and newcomers John Cramp, Allan Hudson, Norm Munro and John Snaidero all appear certain for senior selection.
Cramp, Snaidero and Hudson moved well in Griffith's first trial game against Finley with Snaidero doing the better of the three last Sunday against Berrigan. He has a great turn of pace, handles well in the ground play but his overhead play is open to improvement.
Showing neat form in training sessions, a week in hospital robbed Norm Munro of a chance to show out in his first trial match last Sunday. His natural ability won him four games with Essendon 2nds last season and Griffith fans will soon see him at his best.
Of the old players, captain-coach Len Sexton and ruckman Bill Biron will probably share the greatest responsibility this season.
Sexton is Griffith's scoring avenue and is dangerous anywhere in the forward line. His frequent change in positions unsettles the defence, allowing Sexton's pace and elusiveness the opportunities he seldom ignores.
Lack of big men throws the brunt of the ruck work on Biron's broad shoulders. He faces a stiff test on Sunday opposed to Whitton's coach Frank Fitzpatrick, last year's coach of the Leeton Redlegs.
Defence is one Griffith point with little need as John Anderson, Gordon Browne, Allan Hudson, Don Best, Bob Tyndall and Bob Carroll have shown excellent early season form in the trial games.
The attack is sharp enough with Bill Tyndall, Les Collis and Doug Geddes assisting Sexton to gather the harvest of goals.
A replacement for the injured Kevin Rowston at centre half-forward has its problems, however. Possibly a ruck change with Kevin Luhrs and Jim Eley maybe a counter by the selectors. In the centre play, Cramp, Snaidero and Munro will compete to join winger John Bortolazzo.
Should Hathaway decide to go to Berrigan, Bill Tyndall faces a bigger task as rover and the selectors will probably use Les Collis as a change rover. Despite their losses from last season, Griffith will still field a side good enough to open the competition with a win.
