Match report: The Griffith Swans picked up the RFL record for the greatest number of games in a row won by over 100 points after defeating East Wagga-Kooringal at the Exies Sports Complex on Friday night. Even though Griffith kicked 160 to 45, it was shown good defence will win matches before kicking a big score.
Griffith got the jump in the first term and led by six goals at the first change, but it took some brilliant play by the backmen to hold the willing East Wagga Hawks during the second term.
Captain-coach Anthony Pavey didn't allow the work done by his players slip by without a comment. "It was good tight work from the defence while the rest of the play in the quarter was a bit sloppy. "We battled our way through it and then the backline got on top for the rest of the game and the confidence in the side rose. "It was a good win and they never stopped coming so we couldn't relax, and we need some tough encounters like this coming into the top sides in the next few weeks," he said.
Captain-coach of East Wagga, Darren Turner, said his side gave it their all, but came up against a better side. "In fact, they are probably the best we have met and will take a lot of stopping, but I was pleased with the way our fellows battled it out all night." he said.
Not only did the Swans show their fighting quality, but showed they have plenty of versatility in the players on the paddock. Gary Argus, who had kicked 24 goals in three matches, missed through a hamstring injury and Adam Baulch, who had kicked 10 goals for the season, was dropped to the reserves for missing training.
This left a hole in the scoring area, but Pavey shifted Don Moran from centre half back to half forward flank, and he kicked seven goals, while Jamie Bennett kicked four from the pocket where Baulch would have been stationed. New recruit Graeme Woods not only slipped into centre half back but was named best on the ground.
One of the surprise packets on the night was Brendan Giason, who was only playing his fourth game of Australian football as be is better known as a representative touch player but showed he will be a big plus for the side. He is a very mobile big man and has good hands and a tremendous leap, but some will tell you he is a poor kick. He showed that wasn't his downfall as he kicked three brilliant goals, two of them from 50 metres out. Ray Willis stood out on a half forward flank in his first senior game. Greg Dreyer was solid in the back pocket and Tony Mahar didn't do too much wrong at fullback.
There were a lot of 100 per cent triers in the Hawks lineup, but Jamie Charlton, Justin Bone and Turner were the standout players who gave 100 minutes. Edited. (The Area News - Monday, April 28, 1997).
