GRIFFITH NOTES: "Riverina Football Record" June 18, 1988 - No. 10

What a debacle! Four losses in four grades (includes the netballers!), the less said about each the better, we ended up buried in the centre of the Narrandera Sportsground.

The Seniors started well with two goals early in the quarter and another two later to only be one point behind at the change. There were a few after that and the supporter could be forgiven for thinking that the Swans had gone home for the middle quarters but decided to finish the game and come back for the last to match Narrandera but alas the middle quarters were where we lost the game. The Eagles were more desperate all day and is always the case in wet (slosh) weather usually lead on the scoreboard. Pancho (Prest) was awarded the pewter for his game at centre halfback. Mal (Williams), Darrell (Collins), Ian (Geddes), Fifty (Dreyer) and ‘Sutto’ (Sutton) where good players as was Matt Signor in his first senior game. It’s time to get right behind Ducky O'Donnell from here on in or it will be a ling winter.

The Seconds started strongly and were up at quarter time and half time but slipped away in the second half. The heavy going slowed the speedsters like 'Wazza' (Bellincanta), Sid (Yerbury) and co. The pewter went to Lowey (brother-in-law to Ducky) for an excellent performance in almost his first game of Aussie Rules. There was a comeback by some ‘oldies’ who pulled on the boots to make up the numbers and it was great to see Bagga (Bagatella), Cuddie (Cudmore), Marlon (Brand) and Crowie all out there again the later had a very short-lived comeback, however two minutes seem to be the general consensus of opinion but hopefully he won’t let that deter him from continuing (you’re only lacking training and match practice, Crowie! Scott Wade again had a good game with Warren 'Wazza' Bellincanta and Justin Sanson two of the other better performers.

The U18s could do little with 14 players. It’s a pity that a side who could make the finals is let down by players who don’t want to travel or make themselves unavailable for one reason or another. Paul Young, Robert Kelly and Matt Cox were the better players.

The Netballers found it hard. Slippery conditions didn’t help the game and the Eagles handled the ball much better. The girls were very thankful for the hospitality shown after the game by the Eagles who took the girls to their homes for a much need shower and warm up. Rosemary, Blossum, Dim Sim and Judy H tried hard all day.

Today we meet the Tigers in their lair, Let’s make amends for our last round defeat. Good luck to all teams.

Note for the ladies: Aerobics classes will be starting again soon at the clubrooms on Tuesday and Thursdays (so the men can babysit). Watch this space for dates and times. All welcome, only $2.
